Someone—I can’t remember who, for the life of me—once wrote that all novels are really letters aimed at one person. As it happens, I believe this. I think that every novelist has a single ideal reader; that at various points during the composition of the story, the writer is thinking, “I wonder what he/she will think when he/she reads this part?” For me that first reader is my wife, Tabitha.
I need to get ideas out in front of me so that I can see them properly, and writing not-fully-baked notions on a website is often the best way for me to do that. Social media does not “get” not-fully-baked. Social media is useless for thinking out loud and exploring notions. Social media — bizarrely, given its nature — does not do context.
It would calm me when I would start to think that what I was doing was important.

La historieta consiste en transmitir informaciones por medio de dibujos y palabras integrados entre sí. Un chiste de Forges para mí es historieta, una página de El príncipe Valiente también. Lo mismo unas instrucciones de cómo montar un mueble de Ikea. Con lo que los esquemas cartesianos, los diagramas de flujo y otras formas de mostrar visualmente información me parecen que pueden ser recursos tan útiles en nuestro medio como los bocadillos o los cartuchos de texto. Poner límites a un medio híbrido cuya principal ventaja es que tiene pocos límites, me parece una tontería.

El marketing me encanta, me admira y me apasiona. Es una pieza clave para entender la actividad empresarial: el ángulo de su estudio que se centra en la creación, comunicación, entrega e intercambio de propuestas de valor. En mi ámbito profesional (un ámbito bastante difuso que gira alrededor de la aplicación a la estrategia empresarial de las mejores prácticas del Diseño en general y el Diseño Centrado en las Personas en particular) el marketing es vital. De hecho, en términos estrictos, casi todo lo que hacemos pertenece a lo que tradicionalmente se llama Marketing de Producto (el esfuerzo por hacer cosas que la gente quiera). En España es muy corriente una visión muy limitada del marketing, centrada únicamente en el Marketing de Promoción (el esfuerzo de hacer que la gente quiera las cosas que hacemos), y eso en la comunidad de gente que hace producto, viene acompañado de cierto desdén o desprecio hacia la gestión de promoción. Me parece una actitud muy esnob. Yo no soy para nada un experto en marketing de promoción, y muchas de sus técnicas, especialmente las más tradicionales, como publicidad “above the line”, puede parecerme que muy a menudo se usan muy mal, de forma bastante engañosa y contribuyendo a los aspectos más destructivos de la sociedad de consumo. Pero una cosa es señalar eso, y otra muy distinta despreciar el marketing, así en global, lo que me parece equivocado, provinciano e ignorante.
